Nine years ago, I wrote a blog post on how to run great virtual teams.
The more things change, the more they stay the same! I still recommend all these tips!
Many of you are starting to work from home more frequently.
There are a lot of benefits to working from home. However, looking back there is a SIGNIFICANT mental and physical shift required to being successful.
Many of my clients work from home. They want to continue to strive during work but also ensure that they are taking care of themselves and spending quality time with their friends and family. And a lot of that comes with planning, setting boundaries and building your personal MOAT!
You need to do three things. Every day.
First, you need to PLAN your alone time. The Slack notifications, the IM messages, the constant pings. You need time during your work to think! Allocate whatever time you can, even if it’s 15 minutes, for your personal “No Contact Zone.” Block this time in your calendar.
Second, you need to PLAN your social time. Find a couple of hours per week during the WORKDAY that you can dedicate to meeting people in person, working from a coffee shop, or just be around PEOPLE. Block this time in your calendar.
Third, you need to PLAN your work time. It’s very easy to start logging on when you wake up and constantly work until you go to bed. Set boundaries! Sure, crises happen, but turning off your computer and phone will do wonders for your mental and physical state. Set a reminder on your calendar or an alarm on your phone.
Stay tuned as I have a lot more to say on this topic!
